After visiting the Future of Web Design last year, I thought I’d attend again this year taking my trusty sidekick Jack along for the ride this time. Once again it was a very interesting day with top-quality speakers. Read the rest of this entry »

It is pretty hard to ignore the rising panic amongst banks, consumers and Gordon Brown as Britain’s economy (allegedly) plummets uncontrollably into decline. Recently it has been difficult to pick up a paper without every headline describing sub-prime markets, falling house prices and rocketing interest rates so you’d be forgiven for thinking now would be about the worst time to re-launch a financial services web site. Or would it? Read the rest of this entry »

The BVCA (British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association) today voted the Terra Firma web site, Site of the Month, April 2008. The BVCA each month highlights a web site from the private equity and venture capital industry. They went onto commend the recently published Annual Review, saying “Terra Firma’s Annual Report published earlier this month is an impressive reflection of the way buy-out houses are becoming much more open and responsive to wider audiences.”

Web Directions North 08 wrapped up a few weeks ago and I have finally found time to write up my notes. As with dConstruct 2007, all of the speakers were excellent and although I didn’t get to see all of the presentations, here are my notes on most of them. Read the rest of this entry »

We are quickly becoming overwhelmed with the number of online accounts we have to open, maintain and access. Within each of these accounts, we store all sorts of personal data including photo’s, contact details, bookmarks, video and music. The privacy of our data is out of our control and the whole process has become very difficult to manage. Read the rest of this entry »

Why would you want to do mobile IM? I guess I am one of those geeks who likes to try out every new software especially if it is free and available for your mobile phone. I am now deeply happy that I downloaded Fring for the ability to ping my friends on Skype IM without powering my laptop up, or to check into google chat. Read the rest of this entry »

I spotted this paragraph whilst doing a bit of research today. Now, I’m all for a bit of SEO but this is taking it a little bit too far. This kind of thing doesn’t surprise me on some less high-profile sites, but this was taken from the web site of one of the UK’s leading insurance companies. Read the rest of this entry »

Does the World (Wide Web) need another social networking site? Kylie seems to think so as today saw the launch of KylieKonnect – the social networking site for Kylie fans. All seems rather niche to me (this could quite easily be just a group on Facebook) and other than an excuse to put Kylie on our blog, it had me thinking – are social networks becoming nothing more than ‘must-have’ site accessories?

Recently, the San Francisco Federal court held that websites are required by California law to be accessible. The reason for this is that Target failed to make it’s website accessible to the blind. The Target site failed to provide alt tags for images, keyboard options for navigation and navigation headers. There seems to be differing opinions on whether building accessible sites should be a legal requirement. Read the rest of this entry »

I’m not much of a designer (seriously) but even so, whenever I stumble upon a Web 2.0 site I wonder what font they have used, and why all the website logos look so remarkably similar. I’m sure you know what i’m talking about…that rounded, consumer friendly font they all love so dearly. Anyway, on my travels I discovered some corporate logos that had been designed in Web 2.0 style, they are really cool and I thought i’d share them.
