Portable Personal Data

DataPortabilityWe are quickly becoming overwhelmed with the number of online accounts we have to open, maintain and access. Within each of these accounts, we store all sorts of personal data including photo’s, contact details, bookmarks, video and music. The privacy of our data is out of our control and the whole process has become very difficult to manage.

In an attempt to solve this problem, the DataPortability working group are bringing existing open standards (OpenID, APML, OAUTH …) together into a single blueprint. Hopefully, this will make it much easier for the user to manage their data across multiple sites/services and feel confident about data privacy.

For me the most important thing in all those social/professional networks is how intuitive and friendly their interface is. Being subscribed to a zillion sites I hardly manage to keep track of a third of them. So, the service proposed by DataPortability has to work efficiently not only on the data management level but, above all, on the interface design as well. Let’s wait and see.

It would seem that OpenID is getting some serious backing now with Google, IBM, Microsoft, VeriSign, and Yahoo! all joining the board. Read more about Evolving the OpenID Foundation Board.
