Street View gets an extra dimension

When I first saw the news that Google Maps’ Street View had gone 3D I thought it was an April Fools’ Day gag. But low and behold it’s actually a reality — and a pretty well executed reality at that. The above image is of Oxford Circus, London and shows off the effect pretty well. So grab your 3D specs and have a virtual wander around.
3D seems to be coming back into fashion lately with 3D cinema in full swing and 3D television just on the horizon, could we be looking at a 3D web in the future or maybe a resurgence in 3D printed design? There are already a handful of websites that use anaglyphic 3D (utilising red/blue glasses) including a 3D YouTube channel and .net magazine recently had a 3D cover and feature for their 200th issue.
With advances in display technology we’ll most likely see the same technology currently used on the big screen moving to our desktops with 3D displays for our computers. We wont have to wear strange cardboard frames and coloured lenses which make us look like throw-backs to the 50s, instead opting for Ray-Ban style polarised bins so we at least look like slightly more up-to-date 80s throw-backs.

I’d love to say that I knew that this was a gag, but I’m going to do the honourable thing and admit that I had no idea that this was an April Fools’ Day joke (although I was a tad suspicious)! I just wish we had that much spare time at Dusted to create such a well executed feature, just for a laugh!

What what?? Google dropped the 3D of street view! I tried first with my ‘high-end’ 3D cinema glasses but it didn’t work. Needed an old school cardboard and cello 3D glasses, but by the time I got hold of them, pufff, 3D was no longer running… duuhh
