Since the value of the pound has been dominating the news, I wanted to write about a more positive note on the pound. Prime Minister Gordon Brown launched an outward attack on the Conservative Party after the party’s shadow Chancellor George Osborne warned that the collapse of sterling would be down to the government’s ambitious plans to spend its way out of the economic crisis. Radiohead’s latest video for their single House of Cards is, in true Radiohead fashion, a little bit ground-breaking. The video was recorded without light and without cameras. Instead they employed a couple of scanning technologies that mapped the scenes in 3D. They could then use the raw data to create the video using various rendering options and show the scenes from any angle they desired. Read the rest of this entry »

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Offf festival in Lisbon, as a Dusted correspondent. The event, in its 8th edition, is one of the most exciting digital design festivals in Europe at the moment. It showcases top talents from web design to typography, motion graphics to installations, in a 3day marathon of talks, performances and workshops, lasting 10 hours each, uufff.

The footer, as if to warrant its physical position in life, can often be left until last during the design process, like some sort of digital outcast. To the contrary, the footer deserves so much more attention than that. It can often be the next port of call in the event of a site’s navigation lacking a link that a user feels should be there (most commonly, this is a link to contact details). Gary Hustwit has announced the DVD release of his documentary Helvetica. This is a feature-length documentary about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the rapid increase of one typeface which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007. Read the rest of this entry »
