Google gears up

No surprise here with Google announcing another new product. Google Gears is an open source browser extension that lets developers create web applications that can run offline. Gears allows users to cache and serve application resources (HTML, JavaScript, images, etc.) locally. There is also functionality to store data locally in a fully-searchable relational database. I’ve had a test drive and it looks great.

How posh is your site?

For many developers a gentle nudge is often needed to encourage the correct use of semantic (X)HTML, the nudge in this case is Plain Old Semantic HTML (POSH). There is a POSH checklist for developers to follow and also some helpful resources. To keep on track just write meaningful markup and put presentation to one side, until you start writing the stylesheet.

Web framework comparison

With so many developers focussing on the speed of web application development and ease of maintenance, it was only a matter of time until web frameworks began to appear. With this in mind, I thought It was about time I checked out Rails and Symfony to see how they matched up.
