I’m not much of a designer (seriously) but even so, whenever I stumble upon a Web 2.0 site I wonder what font they have used, and why all the website logos look so remarkably similar. I’m sure you know what i’m talking about…that rounded, consumer friendly font they all love so dearly. Anyway, on my travels I discovered some corporate logos that had been designed in Web 2.0 style, they are really cool and I thought i’d share them.

So says Jakob Nielsen in this article on the BBC News web site. I’ve always considered Nielsen as ever-so slightly over-zealous in his usability beliefs and on this subject I feel no different. However, if you dilute his opinions down they can be a bit easier to swallow. It is true though, as he says, that many firms are ‘turning their backs on the basics’, although it is entirely possible to get the basics right and still use Web 2.0 technologies to make the experience even more usable. You just need to know what you are doing, as has always been the case.

One of the drawbacks of web 2.0 apps is that the limitations of (X)HTML can cause usability and accessibility problems. The W3C’s standards draft for Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) looks to address those limitations. Read the rest of this entry »
