Web 2.0 ‘distracts good design’
So says Jakob Nielsen in this article on the BBC News web site. I’ve always considered Nielsen as ever-so slightly over-zealous in his usability beliefs and on this subject I feel no different. However, if you dilute his opinions down they can be a bit easier to swallow. It is true though, as he says, that many firms are ‘turning their backs on the basics’, although it is entirely possible to get the basics right and still use Web 2.0 technologies to make the experience even more usable. You just need to know what you are doing, as has always been the case.
